Things that make you go Hmmm

Are You Right or Left Brained ?

Both sides do complement each other

It all started with one Facebook post of mine, and I knew I was hooked to see what this is all about ! Is that Left or Right brained of me ???

I had to take THIS TEST to find out. Please try your hand at it as it’s pretty interesting.

“Everybody doesn’t see exactly the same color,” Dr. Vaughn explains. “When you call something red, your friend might see it as red, but they’re not seeing exactly the same wavelength as you.” seen from Health magazine.

Still, he thinks the more likely explanation is that it’s contextual, and that much of it has to do with what the person is expecting when they look at the photo.

Don Vaughn, PhD, a neuroscientist at UCLA, tells Health: “I think what people don’t realize is vision is something you learn, it’s not something you’re given. Plenty of studies have shown that depending on what your exposure is to the world, you can actually see things differently than somebody else.”

Okay, so the science isn’t totally clear on why people can see the same image differently. But as Vaughn points out, “What these illusions make us realize is that we’re as unique on the inside as we are on the outside.”

Will Smith doesn’t see what I see !

The theory is that people are either left-brained or right-brained. Because of this one side of their brain is dominant. If you’re primarily analytical and methodical in your thinking, you’re said to be left-brained. If you’re more creative or artistic, you’re thought to be right-brained.

This theory is based on the fact that the brain’s two hemispheres function differently. Thanks to the research of psychobiologist and Nobel Prize winner Roger W. Sperry, he first brought this to light in the 1960s.

Logic is not the only attribute of left-brain dominant individuals. Some are unexpected. The left is more verbal, analytical, and orderly than the right brain. It’s sometimes called the digital brain. It’s better at things like reading, writing, and computations. Some are unexpected. For example, left-brained people are likely to be dog lovers, and prefer classical music They also cannot be hypnotized. Lawyers, judges and bankers tend to be left-brained.

What about the rest of us? The right hemisphere is associated with creativity, emotion and intuition. It also controls the left side of the body, so right-brained people are often left-handed. Right-brainers are characterized as artistic and innovative. Their thought processes are sometimes viewed as irregular and roundabout, but use of “free association” often breeds originality and inventiveness. Certain occupations are associated with right-brained people, including politics, acting and athletics. Many occupations that require creative thinking, perceptiveness and spontaneity are in the field of the right-brain dominant.

The connections are extremely fast

According to Sperry’s research, the left brain is also connected to:

  • logic
  • sequencing
  • linear thinking
  • mathematics
  • facts
  • thinking in words

The right brain is more visual and intuitive. It’s sometimes referred to as the analog brain. It has a more creative and less organized way of thinking.

Left and Right brain

Sperry’s research suggests the right brain is also connected to:

  • imagination
  • holistic thinking
  • intuition
  • arts
  • rhythm
  • nonverbal cues
  • feelings
  • visualization
  • daydreaming

We do know the two sides of our brain are different, but does it necessarily mean that we have a dominant brain just like we have a dominant hand ?

A team of neuroscientists set out to test this. After a 2 year study, they found No proof that this theory is correct. MRIs of 1,000 people revealed that the human brain doesn’t actually favor one side over the other. The networks on one side aren’t generally stronger than the networks on the other side.

The two hemispheres are tied together by bundles of nerve fibers, creating an information highway. Although the two sides function differently, they work together and complement each other. You don’t use only one side of your brain at a time.

Whether you’re performing a logical or creative function, you’re receiving input from both sides of your brain. For example, the left brain is credited with language, but the right brain helps you understand context and tone. The left brain handles mathematical equations, but right brain helps out with comparisons and rough estimates.

General personality traits, individual preferences, or the way you learn doesn’t translate into the notion that you’re left or right-brained. You may know some people that you swear are only one sided ! I’ve seen this myself.

Still, it’s a fact that the two sides of your brain are different, and certain areas of your brain do have specialties. The exact areas of some functions can vary a bit from person to person.

Women and men equally need to keep their brain cells sharp

Tips for keeping your brain sharp:

Keeping your brain active may help increase vitality and possibly generate new brain cells. A lack of mental stimulation may increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Look below !

Tips and tricks

Here are a few tips to keep your brain stimulated:

  • Spend some time each day reading, writing, or both.
  • Never stop learning. Either take a class, learn a new language, or try to acquire some new skills.
  • Tackle challenging crossword and sudoku puzzles.
  • Play memory games, board games, card games, or video games.
  • Take on a new hobby that requires you to focus.
  • Your brain benefits from physical activities as well. Aerobic exercise a few times a week can help improve learning and verbal memory.

Tips for boosting creativity:

If you’re trying to enhance your creative side, here are a few ways to get started:

Read about and listen to the creative ideas of others. You might discover the seed of an idea you can grow, or set your own imagination free.

Try something new. Take up a creative hobby, such as playing an instrument, drawing, or storytelling. A relaxing hobby can help your mind wander to new places.

Look within. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what makes you tick. Why do you gravitate toward certain activities and not others?

Keep it fresh. Break your set patterns and go outside your comfort zone. Take a trip to a place you’ve never been. Immerse yourself in another culture. Take a course in a subject you haven’t studied before.

The bottom line

Whether you’re working on a complicated algebra equation or painting an abstract work of art, both sides of your brain are actively participating and providing input.

You’re not truly left-brained or right-brained, but you can play to your strengths and broaden your mental horizons. A normal, healthy brain is capable of lifelong learning and unlimited creativity. Let the Pink and White shoe..HEHE..be part of our differences in how we see things. The world is full of individual choices as well as the life we lead. Make it wonderful !
